SHANGHAI ALLEY

Jacket, H&M / Shirt, VOLCOM / Skirt, H&M [DIY Dye] / Purse, VINTAGE / Boots, Dr Martens

Oh hey...

I've been doing a lot of DIY lately. This skirt is one of the most recent things I've done. It was a lot more labor intensive then I had originally planned. Did you know bleaching doesn't always turn the fabric white? Sometimes, it goes pink. This skirt was originally a blueish grey. After sitting in a bleach bath for what turned out to be a whole afternoon, it was pink. Make sense? Not to me but now I know. Lesson learned. Unless it's denim, be wary. My plan was to bleach it white, then dip dye to this red. Being pink, I mixed up my batch of dye on the stove, stuck the whole skirt into the bath and then took a hanger and left half the skirt in the bath for the remaining 18mins. Well, my fade didn't turn out. SO I then had to put the lighter side of the skirt BACK into a bleach bath to get a more prominent fade. One week and bottle of bleach later I have (more-or-less) what I was hoping for!

OTHER NEW THINGS...
1. I got a new bike. I couldn't be happier. Buh-bye bus pass.
2. I made myself a black maxi skirt I can actually walk in.
3. I got the other side of my nose pierced.
4. I shamelessly read White Girl Problems by Babe Walker. Hilarious. Say what you want.
5. I found a whole chicken in my freezer and roasted it with the fire alarm only going on off twice. AND it was still edible. And delicious I might add.
6. I can't get enough of this site. And this one too.

These ladies are my new summertime favorite...

CANT TOUCH THIS

Between fashion weeks, editorials and photos of things I won't be able to afford in the next 5 years, we have street style. Something I think I need to look at more. I mean, I visit personal style blogs everyday and I adore every one of them but sometimes you need to branch out a bit.

When I branch out, all I want to do is shop. I tell myself I need something like that. That everything will okay until I get said item. Then something else pops up, and then another, and then another..you get it. Thankfully for me (and my bank account) it's almost always thrift shopping I crave. At times like these, I also wish I lived closer to my parents so I can finally raid all their old clothes I said were ugly when I was a kid. My dad, to this day still wears a denim button up with jeans, and just the other day I asked my mom if she still had, and could send me, the shoes I specifically remember thinking were the ugliest things around. This coming from the kid who wore an over sized red Calgary Flames tee with blue, pink and purple striped shorts.

Anyways, needless to say it's been on my mind non-stop lately. The colours, the prints, the clashing, the big sneakers...the denim on denim! It might have something to do with Beverly Hills 90210 showing up on Netflex. Brandon living the California Dream in a Canadian Tuxedo and Dylan's oversized silk shirts with harem style pants; Donna's bodycon dresses and Brenda's blazer. Love.

HEAVY METAL

I took a metalsmithing class a couple weeks back and made this pendant. I loved the class and am looking into a more advanced class within the next month or two. I tried to use most of the techniques we learned and I think I did pretty well. I have so many projects I want to start within the next while. Can't wait!

CHAINLINK

I made these chain bracelet/rings the other day. I've seen them a few times here and there and thought I should give my jewelry making skills (which is very little) a go. I'm super happy with them and I'm definitely planning on making more, and more jewelry in general! I also have quite a few graphic tees that I need to cut up/bleach/sew/rip/cheese grate/whatever. I've been slacking hardcore. I have so many things exciting things and projects I'm planning on doing this year. One of them being a metalsmithing class which I cannot stop thinking about...I just need to find one. 2012 is going to be good.

DID SOMEBODY SAY FUDGE?

I'm currently sitting at the airport in Calgary waiting for my long delayed flight back to Vancouver. I'm bored as hell so I thought I'd share with you one of my favorite holiday treats- divinity fudge. It's a finicky recipe and made with pure sugar but I love it. I realize the holidaze are almost over but new years is this weekend so I'm not allll that late.

________________________________________________________________________________________

you'll need...

2 large egg whites
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup corn syrup
1/2 cup water
you will also need parchment paper, a candy thermometer and an electric beater...

combine the sugar, corn syrup and water in a pot and heat. put your thermometer in the pot but be sure it doesn't touch the bottom of the pot. keep on the burner until the thermometer reads 274 degrees F. usually you want to keep it cooking until what they call the "hardball" stage which is 254 degrees F but i misread the thermometer and both batches turned out perfect. so you choose!

while the sugars are cooking, beat your two egg whites in a large, deep bowl (you will be adding the sugars to this bowl later) keep beating until the egg whites turn frothy and stiff, but not dry. they should hold their shape, like little mountains. when sugars are done, add to the eggs whites and beat on high until the mixture is stiff and no longer shiny. be patient here, you will have to beat for a while. (10 mins perhaps? i didn't quite keep track) when done, spoon in lumps onto parchment paper and let cool. TA-DUHH! fudge! it's best to do this on a dry day. i've made this so many times and it doesn't turn out. it will taste the same, but it will be goopy and won't dry.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday! Enjoy your new years! Don't get too crunky. No, that's a total lie. I don't mean that at all. Be as wild (and safe) as you can be!! It's the new year! I'll be in the woods, on a frozen lake, in the center of the universe with a ton of friends drinking our faces off.

And meet Buddy...I don't think I've ever seen his eyes in the 9 years we've had him.
